Academic and Career Workshops

Workshops to help with your academic and study skills, as well as career development, are held throughout the regular academic year. The workshops below are held 1-2 times per term. Additional workshops for international graduate students are also available through Western's Teaching Support Centre

Reading Strategies for International Students

In this session, staff from the Student Development Centre's Learning Skills Services will discuss ways to identify, record and recall key points in textbooks and academic articles. The session will also help you identify strategies to cope with the large volume of reading in university. Special attention will be given to issues of reading in a second language. This presentation is open to both graduate and undergraduate international students.

International Students and Job Searching

This session is presented by the International and Exchange Student Centre and the Student Success Centre. We will discuss details on Canadian immigration regulations (working on and off-campus or working after graduation). We will also introduce the job search process in Canada including topics such as cultural issues, tools for getting a job, referrals to other services and follow-up workshops (resume, interviews) and handouts.

Writing Skills for International Students

University-level writing can be intimidating for any student. When English is not your first language, writing can cause great anxiety. A counsellor from the Student Development Centre's Writing Support Centre will discuss various strategies and techniques for writing an academic essay. Please join us for this session and learn how to write more effectively.

Classroom Learning Strategies for International Students

In what ways is the Canadian classroom different from that in your own country? In this presentation you will learn what you can expect and how to be successful in lectures, tutorials, and labs. Special attention will be paid to participating in class and small group discussions. These workshops are intended primarily for international undergraduate students.
