Travel Support Letters

Last updated Friday, September 11, 11:30 am

Western University is committed to assisting our international students who must enter Canada to participate in in-person course components (lectures, labs, and/or tutorials), or whose ability to access synchronous online courses is impacted by time zone and/or unreliable internet connectivity for the Fall term, September to December 2020.

Students registered at Brescia, Huron, or King's, please contact your Affiliate University College for assistance.

To be eligible for a letter:

  • you hold a valid study permit or you have been approved for a study permit on or before March 18, 2020; AND
  • you have an in-person course or courses (lectures, labs and/or tutorials) or in-person or research requirements; OR
  • You can’t study online from your home country because of internet restrictions or bandwidth limitations; OR
  • You can’t participate in live online classes from your home country because of the difference in time zones.

OR

  • you currently reside in the United States (US) and will be travelling from the US; AND
  • you hold a valid study permit or you have been approved for a study permit; AND
  • you have an in-person course or courses (lectures, labs and/or tutorials) or in-person or research requirements for fall 2020; OR
  • You can’t study online from your home country because of internet restrictions or bandwidth limitations; OR
  • You can’t participate in live online classes from your home country because of the difference in time zones.

If your classes from September to December 2020 are all available online, we recommend you remain in your home country until travel restrictions change, unless internet restrictions, bandwidth limitations or difference in time zones prevent you from studying online.

If you are exempt from the current travel restrictions and intend to enter Canada in order to begin or continue your studies from September to December 2020, Western can issue a Travel Support Letter to you. This letter will confirm the need for you to be present on campus for the Fall/Winter 2020-2021 term.

Please complete the appropriate form below with critical information. If the criteria are met for a Travel Support Letter, the letter will be emailed to your Western (@uwo.ca) email account within 1-2 business days.

In addition to your travel support letter, you are advised to have a printed quarantine plan to share with Canada Border Services Agency upon arrival in Canada.

  • If you are completing your self-quarantine in residence or in Western-arranged off-campus quarantine accommodations, you'll receive a confirmation letter than can be used to demonstrate your quarantine plan.
  • If you are completing your self-quarantine in another destination of your choosing, please review details on our immigration and travel page, and visit the Government of Canada travel restrictions website

Even with a support letter from Western and a quarantine plan, before travelling it is recommended that you contact the Border Information Service for more information.

A Border Services officer will make a final decision on your eligibility to enter Canada at the Port of Entry.
